Lawyers on the platform of Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association, RAMINBA, has called on all lawyers and Nigerian citizens to rally in solidarity with Matthew Ero ESQ, the victim of car seizure by Taskforce on October 2, 2020, while also alerting members to give legal support to October 1 #RevolutionNow Protesters.
RAMINBA, in a statement released by its chairman, ADESINA OGUNLANA, condemns in strongest terms the seizure of the car belonging to Matthew Ero Esq., a legal practitioner and member of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association by 5 MAN TEAM OF POLICEMEN OF THE LAGOS STATE TASKFORCE, BOLADE OSHODI, LAGOS, who accosted him on CAPITOL ROAD, AGEGE and held the said vehicle at gunpoint ( including stun gun) for purportedly ‘taking one way’.
According to the group, Mr Matthew Ero was taken to Lagos State Special Taskforce Headquarters at Bolade , Oshodi, Lagos where the officials have issued him a ticket to pay N200, 000. O0 and directed him to report himself to the Magistrate Court inside the premises.
The victim’s car was also reported to have been forcibly seized from him on based on a traffic offence, at a gunpoint about three hours ago. The car contained his laptop, a wristwatch reportedly worth N350, 000 .00 among other items. The officials who attended to him stated that the Taskforce had moved the items to ‘Alausa’. RAMINBA is seized of the said Bank Payment Advice which instructs Mr. Matthew Ero to pay the sum of N200,000.00 for a purported offence of “One Way”
“It is bewildering under which provision of the law that such a charge is being preferred. Mr. Matthew Ero has caused a petition to be written in his name to the Commander, Lagos State Special Taskforce. He has also approached the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association for her intervention.
Consequently, RAMINBA hereby calls on lawyers and all citizens in general, who are desirous of justice to converge at the Bar Centre of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch on Friday, 2nd October, 2020 by 9am to express solidarity with Mr. Matthew Ero by proceeding with him to the Lagos State Special Taskforce Headquarters, Bolade , Oshodi and Alausa, where they claimed that his vehicle is detained to demand the release of the said vehicle. An injury to one is an injury to all.”
In a more indignant call for justice, the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA) decided to also express solidarity with the #RevolutionNow nationwide mass protests convened by the Coalition for Revolution (CORE) set to hold across the country on 1st October, 2020.
The statement condemned the pronouncements credited to various State Commands of the Nigerian Police Force and Department of Security Services to repress the protests scheduled for tomorrow.
RAMINBA reiterates her long-standing position that the right to peaceful assembly by peaceful protesters is a fundamental right. However, in the circumstances where the state security agencies act in violation of the said fundamental rights by arresting, harassing, detaining, arraigning and prosecuting the #RevolutionNow protests, the organization directs all her members nationwide to be on the alert and cases of such violations can be directed to the Legal Assistance Hotlines , hereunder provided by the organization.
